I grew up in Brookline, MA. Affluent? Yes. Diverse. Not so much. It wasn’t until I stepped onto campus at Morehouse College that I would realize how much of my history I hadn’t been taught although, ironically, I’d had one of the best educations in the country.
Educated with no real concept of my heritage made me wonder, what about the others? Were they learning nothing too? Less than nothing? Maybe even lies? It was then that my seed sprouted into a full-fledged desire to not only become a teacher, but to dedicate my life to ensuring that every black kid that I could reach would know where they come from, how their ancestors paved the way, and what their real future looks like with the right support system.
I teach educators and school leaders how to properly educate our Black children. ‘No kid left behind’? That’s an understatement in my book. Oh yea, I write books, too.
